What a Friend We Have in Jesus.

I lost a friend.  In fact, I’ve lost several.  

A little more than a year ago, our dog ran off, as if to warn us of what was ahead.  In the months since, both my in-laws died.  Before we could adjust to those losses, a dear friend very suddenly passed into the unhindered presence of Jesus, unfurling a season of grief unlike what I’ve known before.
The effect of my friend’s loss has been especially surprising — a rolling revelation, like sod being unrolled across dirt.  When she died, I felt her loss immediately and deeply but as a pastor to many others who also lost a friend, I was kept busy for weeks by the barrage of texts, emails and visits.  I didn’t realize immediately how big the hole was that her absence created for me personally.  Over time, as I’ve settled into this reality, I’ve realized how much I leaned on her, how much I miss her.  
She was a great friend.
I’ve said often in these days since her death that loss is exhausting.  Right now, I simply can’t manage the speed I’m used to; my brain wears out.  I find myself preoccupied (or unoccupied, or unable to be occupied; or unable to find words to express this).  New ideas approach me like the Peanuts’ character, Pigpen — surrounded by dust.  I am usually up for something new; but these days, not so much.
As I come to terms with the loss of a friend, I am learning things about the nature of friendship.  I realize that this person who was integral to the ministry of our church was also a sounding board and counselor for me.  She had a knack for being present without judgment, when I was most exasperated.  She reflected Christ in that way.  I have learned that in the midst of my loss, Jesus is often the one friend wise enough to simply be present without comment.  Some days, it frustrates me, his quietness.  I interpret it as rejection because I am a broken person desperate for someone to fix my pain, to clear the fog, to say something in 140 characters or less that will make all the rest of it make sense.  But no matter how much I beg, manipulate or argue, Jesus keeps his posture — quiet, but solidly present.  A faithful friend.  Which, of course, is what I need most even when I don’t know it.
Years ago, another friend of mine lost her husband.  They met in an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting and became followers of Jesus.  I never got the sense Christian life was easy for them; it was so different from what they’d lived for so long.  When you’ve lived a lifetime trying to fill an emptiness with alcohol, all your relationships incubated in the petri dish of addiction, it is reasonable to wonder if Jesus is just another way to be disappointed. 
But hard as it was, my friend and her husband discovered Jesus was the one thing that worked.  He saved them from self-destruction and fed them a kind of healing nothing else had been able to offer.  He was the only one patient enough, kind enough, to hang in through the valleys to the feasts on the other side.  And Jesus was the one who taught them to be friends with each other.  When my friend’s husband became ill, they leaned on Jesus together and discovered he was enough.  Just days before he died, my friend’s husband, laying on his deathbed, turned to her and said, “You know, it really is true: what a friend we have in Jesus.”  
Yes, and amen.  Surely it is no coincidence that it was precisely in his death that Jesus taught us some of the more profound lessons in friendship.  Among his final words to his followers were these: “I no longer call you servants; I call you friends” (John 15:15).  And then he picked up the cross and pointed it at all humanity — like a kid on a playground choosing his team — inviting all who would choose him in return to become his friends.  Not servants, but friends.
Christ’s friendship is an act of grace.  Brian Edgar, in his book God is Friendship, writes, “It is a profound, unexpected, gracious and powerful promise” (p. 28).*  It is richer than servanthood, beyond what we can earn.  The friendship of Jesus offers the joy of intimate presence, one to another, deep calling to deep.  It is Jesus being willing to be with me in my grief without words — unjealously, unswervingly, peacefully there.  And it is Jesus who teaches me to be a friend to those around me.
But I’m a pastor.  Subtlely and not so subtlely, pastors are taught to detach from personal relationships for the sake of building the Body of Christ (this may be especially true of itinerating pastors).  Books upon books indoctrinate us in the art of boundary-making as a mark of good leadership.  Jesus, meanwhile, says things like, “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).   Maybe both things are true.  Maybe there is a place in healthy leadership for giving our hearts to those in our communities.  Perhaps it is not just okay but a mark of holiness to discover the place of friendship not beyond but in the midst of ministry.  
Indeed, that also has been part of my grief, that I haven’t learned sooner how to be a friend to those who have chosen to live in community with me, and to do so as an act of ministry in the best sense of that term.  As Edgar says, “Christian friendship is to be transformative. It is a loving ministry that transforms us into the image of our friend Jesus, and enables us to be friends and reflectors of Christ’s character to others” (p. 172). 
As he so faithfully does, God is redeeming this season of grief by teaching me things I could learn no other way.  He is revealing the power and beauty of friendship as he offers me his whole heart and proves himself a faithful friend.  And he is modeling the kind of friend I can also become, so that in the valley of shadows there is beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning.

We’re all going to die.

One of my top ten movies is What About Bob? In one scene, Bob and Sigmund (or Siggy) are in Siggy’s room having a sleep-over. Bob is a middle-aged neurotic guy who is afraid of everything, and Siggy is a pretty disturbed pre-teen who wears all black and is obsessed with death.

So while they are laying there trying to fall asleep, Siggy asks Bob, “Did you ever think about it? You’re going to die. You. Are. Going. To. Die. We’re all going to die.” And then Siggy says, because Bob is much older than him, “And you are going to die much sooner than me, of course.”

Because Bob is deathly afraid of everything, you expect this to have a crumbling effect on him. But actually, it does the opposite. He decides, in a moment of clarity, that if death is the worst end of it, then maybe everything else isn’t so bad.

Siggy’s right, of course; we’re all going to die. All of us. In a way, Easter is the holiday that celebrates this fact. Easter is that kid laying in bed in the dark, saying, “You’re going to die. We’re all going to die.”

And then Easter asks, ‘What are you going to do about it?”

Church is a verb.

In the story of God’s people, in the book of Exodus we get the whole story of how the tabernacle was built out in the desert.  The tabernacle was meant to be a sign of God’s presence among the people and a signal tower for his plan.  Once the tabernacle was complete, God came into the House and filled it and a cloud rested over it with fire in the cloud so all the people could see it.  And the Lord told them, “When the cloud moves, you move.”  
Depending on which Hebrew word for “tabernacle” we use, it can mean a place to meet or a place that moves.  That tells me that from the very beginning there has always been a relationship between the presence of God and the journey of faith.  It also tells me God never meant for his tabernacle to get stuck in one place.  It was built to move.  And that’s a spiritual principle that is still true today: When God moves, we move.  
What I learn from my desert ancestors in Exodus changes what I understand about the nature of the Church. If “church” is designed to move, then it is more “Verb” than “noun.”  Nouns sit.  Verbs go.  A noun is something I come to and sit in.  A verb is not a monument but a movement. 
With this in mind, consider your own church, or even your own life in Christ.  After all, the Bible tells us we, too, are tabernacles for the Spirit of God.  
Are you a noun or a verb? 
“Church as a noun” says I go to church.  “Church as a verb” says I am the church.  Are you a noun, or a verb?
“Church as a noun” says someone somewhere is supposed to provide the programs and I am supposed to come to them.  The “church as a verb” says I am a functioning part of a body together with a whole lot of others, and a partner in shaping my own spiritual growth.  Are you a noun or a verb?
“Church as a noun” says someone somewhere is supposed to provide me with mission opportunities. “Church as a verb” says what motivates me ought to motivate me.  Are you a noun or a verb?
“Church as a noun” says the church owes me something.  “Church as a verb” says if anyone owes anyone anything, I owe Jesus.  Not to earn my salvation but because of what he’s done for me.   My mission is defined by what Jesus has done for me.  Are you a noun or a verb?
“Church as a noun” stakes a claim.  “Church as a verb” shares the load.  Are you a noun or a verb?
“Church as a noun” is always looking for what we used to have.  “Church as a verb” is looking for what’s ahead.  Are you a noun or a verb?
“Church as a noun” says, “Its not my job.”  “Church as a verb” says, “It is my opportunity.”  Are you a noun or a verb?
“Church as a noun” says church is bricks and mortar.  “Church as a verb” says church is unbound and outbound.  Are you a noun, or a verb?
“Church as a noun” says you come here and we’ll show you Jesus. “Church as a verb” says we’ll come to you and be Jesus.  Are you a noun or a verb?
“Church as a noun” says, “Let’s go to church.”  “Church as a verb” says, “Let’s … just … go.”  Are you a noun or a verb?
“Church as a noun” says, “Going costs too much.  Can’t we just send a check?”  The “church is a verb” says, “Go … and make disciples … of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”  
The Church as a verb says, “When God moves, we move” — whatever the cost, whatever the commitment. Because it is only in following the Spirit, in moving with the Spirit and embracing change, that we find our pleasure, passion and purpose and bring pleasure to God.
